NOW, MORE THAN EVER, THE WORLD NEEDS MORE INTREPID PEOPLE
For some, being Intrepid means crashing through the jungle in search of gorillas. For others, it’s trying street food for the first time, or bunking down on an overnight train with a dozen snoring strangers.
Whatever form it takes, Intrepid is an attitude – a willingness to take yourself far from the comforts of home, embrace difference and open yourself up to new cultures and experiences. To be curious, challenged, fearless, alive.
At Intrepid, that’s what we live for. Our travellers choose to see the world in a way that builds human connection, supports local communities, respects the environment and draws us all a bit closer together.
Because now more than ever, the world needs more Intrepid people.
Six reasons to travel with Intrepid
We get it – travel’s a big decision. It’s not every day you fly across the world to wander the souks of Marrakech or enjoy a dreamy Angkor sunrise. But for us, it’s been our everyday for the past three decades (whew, we’re old). Let’s just say we know what travellers really want: a balance of inclusions and free time, a mix of classic highlights and local secrets you won’t find on Google. And of course, an authentic real life experience.
Our leaders are born and raised in-country, and they know their destination better than anyone. So you’ll do more than just see a place, you’ll live it. Small groups, big adventures and responsible travel – that’s our thing. With 1,000 trips in a variety of styles across 100 countries, we’re sure you’ll find something you like. So let’s get started.
1. Real Life Experiences
What is travel but a search for something that can’t be Googled? We love the highlights, but the real magic for us happens well away from a beaten path. It’s the little noodle bars, hidden galleries and backstreet bodegas and real life experiences you won’t find in a search engine.
2. Connected by travel
The beauty of small group travel isn’t just new places, it’s new perspectives. It’s the stories you hear and the friendships you forge, the ones that stick around long after the tan has faded. Our travellers come from all walks of life; what unites them is where they’re going.
3. Travel works best when it’s balanced
Time is your most precious resource, especially on a holiday. That’s why our trips are built with balance in mind. A little group time, a little you time – the way it should be. And because our tours have an average of just 10 people, there’s more of the world to go round.
4. With great travel comes great responsibility
The world’s a pretty amazing place, and we want to do our bit to keep it that way. And all it takes is a little dash of self-awareness, a slightly softer tread. Sustainable travel doesn’t mean no fun. It means that fun can be used to benefit others. Respect.
5. Adventures should be for everyone
Age, pillow preference, budget, travelling solo or together – it doesn’t matter where you’re from, what matters is where you’d like to go. Our mission is to deliver the best travel experiences to anyone who’s up for them. So no matter if you favour a soft landing or a wild take-off, Intrepid stands for you.
6. Our leader are the greatest
We realised early on that the best folks to show you the heart of a destination are, funnily enough, the ones that live there. These are our leaders: travel experts and friendly locals who know their countries back to front, from every backstreet bar to every hidden gallery. They’re the big, smiling face of Intrepid (and we couldn’t be prouder).
Our trip styles
For travellers on a budget
Basix trips keep things simple to give you amazing experiences at a great price. We use simple, clean and centrally located accommodation and include plenty of free time so you can do the things that suit your budget and interests.
What is Basix style travel?
Our Basix style trips are designed for travellers who want exceptional value, plenty of free time and having the flexibility to choose where and how their time and money is spent. By working plenty of free time into the itineraries and keeping many of the activities optional, we aim to make travel possible for those on even the most slender of budgets. After all, why pay for an activity or excursion you wouldn’t otherwise be interested in? Or a level of comfort you don’t require? As a wise person probably once said, a bed’s just a bed when there’s exploring to be done.
The Original real life adventure
These are our classic small group adventures and the foundation for the whole Intrepid range. We call these trips Original because they are the same style of trip as the first ones we led way back in the 80s (you don’t mess with a winning formula).
They run at a relaxed pace, include plenty of free time, are built from local know-how and have an off-the-beaten-track vibe. Our passengers love them because they’re the opposite of the clichéd big bus group tour: think small, fun and adventurous.
What is Original travel?
Our Original style trips have a great balance of included activities with your group and free time to explore independently. We use a combination of local and private transport and mostly stay at tourist-class hotels – though you could also find yourself camping or the privileged guest of a local family while on a homestay.
What is Comfort travel?
‘Comfort travel’ means encountering all that the real world has to offer, but with an added degree of, well… comfort. We use more private transport, the travel pace more relaxed, the accommodation a touch nicer. And by paying more up front, you’ll be treated to more included meals, more leader-led activities and get a greater immersion in all things local.
We believe that with great travel, comes great responsibility
Since our very first days as a tour operator, responsible business has been at the heart of what we do. Intrepid is committed not just to treading lightly, but to making a real difference – by investing in local communities, human rights initiatives, wildlife conservation projects and the environment. We’re all about operating in a responsible manner and incorporating principles of sustainable tourism and development into the way we provide our travellers with real life experiences. These values are more than just words; they’re ingrained in the culture and daily operations of every Intrepid office and trip.
Intrepid has been a carbon-neutral business since 2010; we now have 27 carbon-neutral offices and offer over 1400 carbon-offset trips. Through our not-for-profit arm, The Intrepid Foundation, we’ve invested over AU $5 million into grassroots projects around the world – projects addressing issues such as healthcare, education, community development and animal welfare – including over AU $750,000 for our Namaste Nepal earthquake relief campaign in 2016.
We’ve led the industry on animal welfare by being the first global tour operator to end elephant rides and by bringing awareness to the cruelty of lion walks. We’ve also taken a leadership position on child protection by removing orphanage visits from our itineraries.
Our commitment to being a responsible business doesn’t end there. Intrepid has identified nine of 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that we can contribute to most to as a tourism business. By focusing on these goals, we ensure a strong commitment to areas where our business can make the most difference and be a company with a purpose beyond profit.
We’re also committed to promoting gender equality, both within our business and without, which is why we’re striving to double our number of female leaders by 2020. Like Becky, the first leader to be employed as a truck driver in East Africa, we hope to create new opportunities the world over.
